Bentwood Chair
The Michael Thonet designed No.18 original was produced by Michael Thonet and Sons in 1876 and has become a fixture of bentwood design history. Thonet, a German cabinet maker, was the first to create successful bentwood furniture designs. Thonet envisioned the new forms possible by using steam to make large pieces of wood pliable. Thonet’s created his quintessential bentwood designs utilizing one piece of wood to form the chair’s back rest and back legs, then he attached a separate seat and the front legs.
